John Knowles, CGP, stands as a luminary in the world of fingerstyle guitar, renowned for his intricate arrangements, expressive touch, and unwavering dedication to the craft. Born in 1942, Knowles's musical journey commenced with the accordion and ukulele, eventually leading him to the guitar during his teenage years. His profound appreciation for harmony and melody was nurtured by early influences ranging from church hymns to classical compositions.

Despite earning a Ph.D. in physics from Texas Christian University and embarking on a career at Texas Instruments, Knowles's passion for music prevailed. He made the pivotal decision to pursue music full-time, a choice that led him to collaborate with legendary guitarists such as Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Lenny Breau, and Tommy Emmanuel. In recognition of his exceptional talent, Chet Atkins honored him with the title of Certified Guitar Player (CGP) in 1996, a distinction shared by only a select few.

Knowles's contributions to music have garnered critical acclaim, including a Grammy Award and two Emmy nominations. His compositions and arrangements have been performed by a diverse array of artists, from classical ensembles to children's performers. As an educator, he has influenced countless guitarists through his publications, workshops, and his long-running FingerStyle Quarterly.

Currently residing in Nashville, Knowles continues to perform, record, and teach, sharing his wealth of knowledge and passion for music with audiences and students worldwide.
